Squaws remain 5-0 undefeated in district

From Coach Bryan Masse

At Tulia last Saturday the C team and JV team both swept the Lady Hornets 2-0. With good passes and hits the JV girls stayed undefeated in district. They beat Tulia 25-15, 25-14.

The varsity girls lost their first district game but won the match 3-1 to stay undefeated in district play. In game one the ladies got off to a slow start and Tulia had the crowd and momentum. The Squaws weathered the storm and won 25-19. In the second game the ladies found themselves behind again and struggled to have enough energy. Tulia finished the game with a run and won 21-25.

In game three the Squaws found some energy and took charge with a 25-16 win. Uo 2-1 and needing a good start the Squaws got off to a 7-0 start. Tulia tried to fight back but the Squaws increased their lead to 23-10. With the match all but over Tulia began to play like they had nothing to lose and gained momentum, clawing back to within 23-19. The Squaws finally relaxed and scored the last two points for a 25-21 victory.

We thought we had it won and got tired but we were able to hang on and get the win. We finished the first round of district 4-0 and are 19-11 on the season.

On Tuesday the Squaws traveled to Olton where the C team and JV won 2-0 and the Squaws beat the Fillies 3-1.

The JV started well and finished game one with good serving, passing, and attacking to a 25-12 win. In game two Olton played better and tried to make a game of it but the Squaws responded and won the game.

The varsity match had the Squaws looked great for the firs eleven points. Olton used both of their timeouts to try and stop Friona’s momentum. Then the Squaws had lots of unforced errors which led to a close 25-23 victory in game one.

Game two was all Squaws as they got into a good rhythm and pounded the Fillies 25-10. In game three the Friona girls were in control of the match until the 23rd point. They relaxed and made some errors and Olton gained momentum and came back for a 24-26 win.

The Squaws knew they let a sweep of Olton go through their hands and came out fighting in game four. Behind good serving and better defense the Squaws built a lead and held on for a 25-15 win.

The Squaws are 5-0 in district and 20-11 overall. Friona hosts Littlefield Saturday October 13 at home. Game time is JV at 11:30 a.m. and varsity at 12:30 p.m. Next Tuesday the Squaws host Brownfield in a non-district match with JV at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6:30 p.m.
