A new school year begins August 17

The Friona Independent School District teachers have been preparing for the current school year since the last bell rang in May. New faces will abound as the new year begins.

The 2017-18 school year will have students attending 175 days, which will be 77,875 minutes. There will be 12 teacher in-service days throughout the year.

Teachers will report to their campuses on Wednesday, August 9-16 for the first in-service of the year. Students will report to their campuses on Thursday, August 17.

The FISD School Calendar will be in the August 10, 2017 edition of the Star. Parents will want to mark their calendars for upcoming days concerning their students.

High school students will be picking up schedules August 7-10. Freshmen will have an orientation/open house/Title 1 meeting at 5:30 p.m. on August 10.

Junior high will hold an orientation on Monday, August 14 at 5 p.m. in the auditorium. They will be meeting the new principal and their new teachers.

New faces will be seen at all four campuses.

At the Primary, Teresa Chavarria will be replacing Kathy Terry as the Nurse. Susan Harkey will be replacing Aimee Godinez in Kindergarten. Pamela Husted is the new SPED Lifeskills/Coach. Allison Steiner will be replacing Deirdre Osborn as a first grade teacher. And Jill Trollinger will be replacing Ashley Smith as principal.

Zac Carr will be replacing Maria Mendoza as a second grade teacher at the Elementary school.

At the Junior High Jessie Galdean is replacing Mark Sundre as principal and Abby White is replacing Sid Sheffy in the P.E./Health/Coach position.

At High School Erin Barnett will replace Catie Parish in FCS. Heather Gillihan is replacing Kathy Eppers as an English teacher. Richard Gordon is replacing Michael Miller as the Spanish II teacher. Kayle Jesko is the new AG teacher. Senera Rodriguez is replacing Valeria Quiroz in Lifeskills and Eduardo Rojas is replacing Jesus Quiroz in the Spanish I/Coach position.

The following teachers are still with FISD but are now working at different campuses replacing other teachers:

Lupita Alvidrez is replacing Kay Larue in Primary first grade. Maria Mendoza is replacing John Shipley as the fifth grade Science teacher. Lisa Reed is replacing Debra Sherrill as the fifth grade reading teacher and Deirdre Reed is replacing Lisa Reed as the Elementary Academic Interventionist. At Junior High Victoria Bueno will replace Celeste Miller as a High School English teacher and Jessica Dominguez will replace Shea Myatt as the Junior High SPED teacher. Ashley Smith is the new Special Services/Student Data coordinator at the FISD Administration building.

Remember that the Texas Sales Tax Holiday is August 11-13. The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced below $100 from sales tax, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend during the weekend.

This year, shoppers will save an estimated $87 million in state and local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday.

Texas’ tax holiday weekend has been an annual event since 1999.
