Chief comeback beats Dalhart in OT

Things looked kind of bleak for the Chieftains during the first half of last Friday’s game. Dalhart scored on the second play of the game on a long run and were leading 14-0 at the half.

The Chiefs turned up the effort in the second half, scored twice to tie the game at 14-14, then won in overtime on a Marco Monreal touchdown. The win improves the Chiefs record to 3-2. They have an open date this week and begin district October 7 vs. River Road here.

Senior Luis Trejo led rushers with 108 yards on 16 carries. Monreal carried 17 times for 67 yards and scored two TDs. Julius Orozco scored once. He had 29 yards on 8 carries. The Chiefs rushed 45 times for 212 yards and the three touchdowns. Trejo is the team’s leading rusher with 410 yards on 63 carries this season.

Monreal completed 11 of 16 passes for 137 yards. Leading receiver Jonathan Hernandez caught 7 passes for 80 yards. Salvador Santiago had two catches for 35 yards. Johnny Ojeda and Edwin Garcia each had one pass reception. On the season Hernandez has caught 19 passes for 352 yards.

Jonathan Hernandez continued his excellent punting average. He punted 6 times for 265 yards, a 44-yard average.
