West 11 Sports will be naming a Player of the Week each week during the 2017 football season. The player of the week against Farwell on September 1 was Marco Maldonado. The player of the week against Booker on September 9 was Marco Monreal. Congratulations to these young men.

The Prairie Acres Activity Department is raising money for their Resident Summer Outing fund by selling chances for a Huffy 26” Nighthawk Mountain Bike. Chances are $1 each or 6 for $5. Stop by Prairie Acres for tickets or they will be at the City Park on Saturday, September 16 during the Maize Days festivities. They will draw the winner at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Miss Friona/Little Miss Friona trivia: In 2006, Sydney Frye, the reigning Little Miss Friona, crowned Brooklynne Johnston as the new Little Miss Friona. Fast-forward to September 8, 2017, Sydney Frye, reigning Miss Friona, crowned Brooklynne Johnston as the new Miss Friona.

Homecoming time is here and new traditions are being ushered in. In the past few years the Homecoming candidates have been escorted onto the field by their fathers and were presented by the Chieftain captains. This year the candidates will once again be escorted by their fathers but the Chieftain captains will not be involved in the ceremony. Times change and so do traditions.

Speaking of Homecoming candidates…congratulations to Erica Barrera, Erika Grado, Jackie Legaretta, Nishna Soto and Megan Stone for being selected this year.

Cargill will be cooking up delicious burgers and the Friona Noon Lions will be serving up their World Famous French fries at the Homecoming game on Friday. Come out to the game and enjoy a delicious meal before they crown the new queen and Friona takes on the Bovina Mustangs.

Runners and walkers will be out early on Saturday morning, September 16. The Dixon Memorial Run/Walk will start at 7 p.m. from Reeve Lake. Good luck to all these participants.

Line Main Street on Saturday at 10 a.m. for the 61st Annual Maize Days parade. If you are interested in being in the parade, lineup begins at 9 a.m. on Euclid by the Friona Junior High School.

Prairie Acres Family Bingo Night is set for Tuesday, September 19 starting at 7 p.m.

Flu shots will be available at the Friona Senior Citizens Center on Thursday, September 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is sponsored by the Parmer Medical Center and Friona Rural Health Clinic.

The Annual Knights of Columbus Council #8938 Golf Tournament will be held at John Pittman Golf Course in Hereford on Saturday, September 23.

Dr. Robert Alexander will be turning 80 soon and his family has a big party planned on Saturday, September 23. Festivities start at 4 p.m. at 1402 Columbia with dinner, cocktails and entertainment by Davin James. Happy Birthday Dr. Bob! (His actual birthday is September 25!)

I was sad to hear that Miss Darla is retiring from the Friona Public Library. I will miss her smiling face and happy greetings when I go to the library or cover the Summer Reading programs. Darla, you will be missed. Enjoy your retirement!

If you have a 3-year-old or older contact the Friona Public Library about Story Time. Every Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. children will enjoy a story and fun activity presented by the Library staff.

Community Bingo at Prairie Acres will be Saturday, September 30 at 3 p.m. The community is invited to come out and enjoy a game of Bingo with the residents.
